Accra, Ghana — Ghana’s Black Queens head coach Kim Björkegren has set his sights firmly on winning the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing it as a “realistic and urgent mission” for both the team and the nation.
Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the team’s final preparation phase, the Swedish tactician expressed confidence in the squad’s progress, unity, and competitive edge.
“The belief is strong, the hunger is there, and we are building a team not just for participation, but for victory,” Björkegren said. “The Black Queens have the talent and the spirit. Our focus now is on tactical discipline, clinical finishing, and mental toughness.”
Since taking over as head coach, Björkegren has overseen a revival in the women’s national side, leading them through an impressive qualifying campaign with back-to-back wins and an unshakable defensive record. His leadership has been praised for instilling professionalism and a renewed sense of purpose in the camp.
The Black Queens, who last reached the WAFCON final in 2018 but fell short of the title, are seeking their first-ever championship in the continental tournament. Expectations are high among fans, many of whom see the 2024 edition as a golden opportunity to break the title drought.
Captain Portia Boakye echoed her coach’s sentiments, saying: “This is our time. We’ve worked hard, grown stronger as a team, and are ready to make Ghana proud.”
Björkegren, known for his analytical style and modern football philosophies, also highlighted the importance of investing in women’s football structures beyond the tournament. “It’s about legacy, not just results,” he added.
The 2024 WAFCON is set to be hosted in Morocco, with Ghana drawn into a competitive group featuring regional rivals Nigeria and debutants Rwanda. The Black Queens are expected to kick off their campaign in July.
As the countdown begins, fans across the country are rallying behind the team with hope and excitement, daring to dream of a historic triumph.
