PNP Youth Wing Demands Immediate Release of Adenta Kumi Following NIB Arrest
The youth wing of the People’s National Party (PNP) is demanding the unconditional release of Adenta Kumi, a leading party activist, following his arrest by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). They accuse authorities of politically motivated harassment

Accra, Ghana – Tensions are rising within Ghana’s political circles as the youth wing of the People’s National Party (PNP) has called for the immediate and unconditional release of party activist Adenta Kumi, who was reportedly arrested by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) under unclear circumstances.
According to a press statement issued on Wednesday, the PNP youth leadership claims that Kumi, a vocal critic of the current government, was “abducted without a warrant or formal charge” and has since been denied access to legal representation and family.
“We believe this is a clear attempt to silence dissent and intimidate young voices who are speaking out against corruption, unemployment, and misgovernance,” the statement reads.
Arrest Details Still Unclear
The NIB has yet to publicly comment on the arrest, and no formal charges have been announced. The opaque nature of Kumi’s detention has further fueled concerns of abuse of state power and due process violations.
Sources within the PNP say Kumi was last seen at a community youth dialogue event in Madina, where he spoke critically about national security spending and youth unemployment.
“This arrest is not just about Adenta Kumi. It’s about the right of every Ghanaian youth to speak truth to power without fear,” said Mawuli Dake, PNP Youth Organiser.
Allegations of Political Targeting
The PNP, a rising third force in Ghana’s political space, has long accused the ruling administration of targeting its members through subtle intimidation tactics. This incident, they say, reinforces that pattern.
However, critics argue that Kumi’s rhetoric often toes the line between free speech and incitement, and caution that if the NIB has legitimate grounds for arrest, transparency is the best course to prevent political escalation.
“If Kumi broke any laws, let the facts come out. But if this is another case of preventive detention without legal grounding, the public deserves to know,” said a political analyst at CDD-Ghana.
Growing Public Concern
Civil society groups and student unions are beginning to weigh in. The Ghana Bar Association has called for due process to be followed, while youth-led protests are reportedly being planned in Accra and Adenta if Kumi is not released or arraigned within 72 hours.
