Accra High Court Dismisses WAEC’s Bid to Withhold WASSCE Results
An Accra High Court has dismissed an application by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) seeking a stay of execution on a ruling that ordered the release of withheld West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
WAEC had withheld the results of approximately 10,000 WASSCE candidates across multiple subjects, citing alleged examination malpractices and irregularities in a statement issued on December 30, 2024.
However, on January 30, 2025, the High Court ruled in favor of four students who petitioned on behalf of all affected candidates, ordering WAEC to release the results unconditionally. The court held that WAEC’s justification for withholding the results was ambiguous and inconsistent, further stating that indefinite withholding could severely impact students’ academic and professional prospects.
Despite this ruling, WAEC filed for a stay of execution pending an appeal. However, during a hearing on February 20, 2025, presiding judge Justice Ali Baba Abature dismissed the application, ruling that WAEC failed to provide sufficient justification for its actions.
Additionally, the court imposed a GHS 5,000 fine on WAEC for the delayed compliance.
This ruling marks a significant victory for the affected candidates, many of whom require their results for university admissions and career opportunities.
Stay tuned for further developments on this case.
